Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as believers of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in the Church mission: The sacrament in which, by pouring water upon a person or immersing in water, and using the words, “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” The one baptized is cleansed of original sin and (in the case of one who has reached the age of reason) of particular sin; The Baptized person is incorporated into Christ and made a member of His Body the Church; the person is infused with sanctifying grace and receives the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit; and this enables the baptized person to receive the other sacraments effectively. The minister of Baptism is ordinarily a bishop, priest or deacon, but in an emergency anyone can baptize validly. Baptism is administered by the priest, normally during the Sunday liturgy.
